Installation of Marvin Desktop Suite

The installers are available for the following platforms:

    • Windows
    • Mac OS X
    • Linux

    {info} A platform-independent installer is also available.

    Windows

    Requires Windows 7 or later.

If you have a 64-bit Windows, you can install both versions of Marvin (32-bit or 64-bit). The table below shows which installer is compatible with a specific environment.

Installer 32-bit Windows with 32-bit Java 64-bit Windows with 32-bit Java 64-bit Windows with 64-bit Java
    Installer - 32 bitMarvin_windows_XXXX.exe ✔️ ✔️
    Installer - 64 bitMarvin_windows-x64_XXXX.exe ✔️

{info} From version 19.1. 64-bit Marvin installers with bundled AdoptOpenJDK11 are also available.

{primary} When Marvin is installed without the bundled Java on a HiDPI monitor and the version of the installed Java is 9 or newer, you may need to manually make an additional setting on Windows. Without it, you may experience glitches, especially text-related ones.

To set manually the HiDPI properties, follow the steps below.

    1. Right-click the MarvinSketch icon.
    2. Select Properties from the context menu.
    3. Navigate to the Compatibility tab.
    4. Click the Change high DPI settings button.
    5. Check the box under High DPI scaling override and select System from the drop-down list.

    OLE Support

The OLE technology is not supported by Microsoft anymore, we recommend JChem for Office for in-place structure editing, data analyzing, visualizing, and reporting in MS Office environment. Alternatively, use the .NET Marvin component installed on your machine. The standalone .NET Marvin is available on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.

    32-bit Windows

You can add the bin folder to the PATH environment variable to be able to run Marvin applications from any directory in the command line. Details about editing environment variables are described in Windows Help. Before starting the installation process, make sure to close all running Marvin applications. Otherwise, the installer may not be able to overwrite certain .jar files.

The running applications include the following:

    • Marvin desktop applications
    • MS-Office documents where Marvin Objects are being edited
    • Running applications where Marvin is embedded, like Instant JChem

You can run the installer in silent/non-interactive mode. For more information about the silent installation, click here.

    64-bit Windows

There are two installers available for Windows 64-bit version; one bundled with OpenJDK 11 and one without it. If you plan to use an installer without the OpenJDK11, make sure to install Java separately.

{primary} The JChem_NET_API is required to be able to insert Marvin OLE (embedded object) into MS Office documents or transfer it between Marvin and MS Office applications. The installer sets up the 64-bit version of JChem_NET_API automatically. As the earlier versions of MS Office suites are not available in 64-bit format, you cannot use the OLE functionality of the 64-bit version of Marvin if your Office does not support 64-bit platforms. In this case, install the 32-bit version of Marvin and JChem_NET_API.

When you edit an embedded Marvin Object in Office, the editor can be different depending on the platform.

    • MS-Office 32-bit requires 32-bit JChem .NET API for Marvin embedding. It uses 32-bit .NET implementation of MarvinSketch unless 32-bit Marvin Beans package is installed. In this case, it prefers the 32-bit Java implementation.
    • MS-Office 64-bit requires 64-bit JChem .NET API for Marvin embedding. The 64-bit .NET implementation of MarvinSketch is

    macOS

    Requires macOS 10.11 or later.

The compressed installer should be recognized by Stuffit Expander and should automatically be expanded after downloading. If it is not expanded, you can expand it manually by using StuffIt Expander 6.0 or later. If you have any problems launching the installer once it has been expanded, make sure that the compressed installer was expanded using Stuffit Expander. If you still have problems, please contact our technical support.

{info} From version 19.1, Marvin installers with bundled AdoptOpenJDK11 are also available.

You can add the bin folder of the Marvin folder to the PATH to be able to run Marvin applications from any directory in the command-line.

    Linux

Requires Debian LTS, Ubuntu LTS, Redhat latest, CentOS latest.

{info} From version 19.1, Marvin installers (Debian and RedHat distribution) with bundled AdoptOpenJDK11 are also available.

If you plan to use an installer without the OpenJDK11, make sure to install Java separately.

{warning} Application crashes with java virtual machine error on Linux systems when File > Document Style > Settings is opened. Uninstalling the ttf-unifont package or updating Java to the latest version can eliminate the problem.
